Follow the yellow brick road in this magical journey to the Land of Oz! The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition brings to life the beloved story of Dorothy, a young girl who dreams of adventure beyond her Kansas home. When a whirlwind transports her to a vibrant and unexpected world, she teams up with a Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion in search of courage, heart, and wisdom. Along the way, they’ll face challenges, discover friendship, and learn that there’s no place like home.
AGES: 8-19 are welcome to audition (age by audition date)

PRODUCTION FEE
$195 production fee (plus parent volunteer hours)

(Closed Rehearsals: Rehearsals at NYT are closed to observers.)

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Dorothy Gale
A sweet, adventurous Kansas girl who dreams of a more exciting life. Though sometimes headstrong and outspoken, she deeply loves her family and friends. Dorothy’s journey teaches her the value of home, friendship, and believing in herself. Strong singer and actor.
Scarecrow
A lovable, energetic companion who believes he lacks a brain. Despite his self-doubt, he constantly demonstrates clever thinking and problem-solving. Requires strong physical comedy and movement skills.
Tin Man
A kind and caring traveler who believes he lacks a heart. Gentle, nurturing, and loyal, he discovers he has been compassionate all along. Requires expressive acting and controlled movement.
Cowardly Lion
A boisterous lion who desperately wants courage. Though he often acts brave, he quickly becomes frightened in difficult situations. Excellent role for a performer with strong comedic timing and personality.
Glinda
The Good Witch of the North. Graceful, wise, and nurturing, she serves as Dorothy’s guide throughout Oz. A warm maternal figure with a lovely singing voice.
Wizard of Oz / Professor Marvel
A mysterious and imposing figure who appears all-powerful but is ultimately revealed to be an ordinary man. Requires charm, humor, and strong character acting.
Miss Gulch / Wicked Witch of the West
The show’s primary villain. Cruel, intimidating, and determined to get revenge on Dorothy. A dramatic, scene-stealing role with a strong stage presence.
Munchkins
The cheerful residents of Munchkinland. Full of excitement and gratitude after being freed from the Wicked Witch of the East. Great roles for younger or beginning performers.
Jitterbugs
Energetic dancers sent by the Wicked Witch to distract Dorothy and her friends. Excellent showcase for strong dancers.
Winged Monkeys
The Witch’s mischievous flying army. Physical, movement-focused roles that are ideal for younger performers and first-time actors.
Emerald City Citizens
Colorful, stylish residents of the Emerald City who help create the excitement and spectacle of Oz.
Winkie Guards
The guards of the Wicked Witch’s castle. Fun character roles with opportunities for comedy and ensemble work.
